For my mitzvah, I chose to go play piano at an old age home called Plumrus, where my granny Val spent the last days of her life.
I was really nervous before I went because I didn't know how I was going to feel being there, or whether the people would even enjoy listening to me play. But when I arrived, I kept hearing that people had been looking forward to me coming and that immediately made me feel happy.
Thinking about my gran also motivated me a lot. It made me feel closer to her and made the experience so meaningful for me.
After I played, I can honestly say it was one of the top ten best things I have ever done in my life.
What surprised me most was that it didn't feel like I was only giving something to other people. I was getting something back too. I realised that sometimes, when you give, you become the receiver as well. I walked away feeling full inside, with love, kindness and happiness.
What was also a surprise was the next day when I heard from my auntie that her friend's mother, who was apparently in the audience, said that everybody loved my playing so much and they hope I come back and play again. And that is something I would like to do indeed!
